Sale yards village won’t be ‘shacks’ BY ANDREW KING

The developer behind the Addington sale yards housing project, says the planned village for rebuild workers and students, will not be a blight on the landscape. Director of Global Edge Properties Alan Edge said the “purposebuilt buildings would be for students, rebuild workers or those

in need of low-cost housing. He said they would not be “shacks as some feared but highquality houses that would help mend the city’s post-earthquake housing demands. Mr Edge said the village would also have a recreation area. The development, which has been included in the replacement district plan, went unnoticed by

local residents – until now. Some are worried at how the development may look. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said he was concerned over the quality of housing. “I’m really concerned that they could be putting relocated houses there. We are just not sure what the agenda is, he said.

Deans Ave Precinct Society chairwoman Clare Mulcock said she would been keeping an eye on the development. “Assuming that the temporary accommodation is developed, we will keep a keen eye on it, and aim to ensure that it meets the required standards, she said.

BY GABRIELLE STUART Helping survivors escape damaged buildings during the February 2011 earthquake inspired Hei Hei resident Hamish Ward to quit the army and take on a building apprenticeship. On Thursday night, he was named the Central South Island’s Registered Master Builders Carters 2015 apprentice of the year.

The 26-year-old was set for a career in the army, but his experience during the earthquakes changed his perspective. He worked on the front lines after the earthquake, helping people out of damaged buildings. That was what motivated him to join the construction industry, he said. “I knew that with the army, I might have had to be overseas, but at the time the big job ahead of me was the rebuild of my hometown, Christchurch.”

He works for Leighs Construction and is studying towards a diploma in construction management. The judges said Mr Ward was a future industry leader who showed “passion and enthusiasm” for the building trade. “Hamish impressed us from the outset with his confidence and direct communication skills.” And he will now go on to compete at the national competition in Auckland in October, against winners from nine other regions. The winner is set to be announced on October 9. Jono Blakely from Kennedys Bush placed second in the competition. The 19-year-old was described by judges as having “a strong depth of experience in many available trade skills with high technical knowledge and is a strong and respectful communicator.” “Jono has been trained well in the housing sector, showing a good knowledge in building methods, materials and safety issues,” they said. WINNER: Winner of the Central South Island’s Registered Master Builders Carters 2015 apprentice of the year, Hamish Ward (right) with employer Anthony Leighs.

POSSIBILE: Temporary accommodation could be put at the northern end of the Deans Ave car park.

Sale yards village won’t be ‘shacks’ From page 1 She said the group would not oppose the developmnet but if it had seen it in the replacement district plan it would have made a submission. “Our aim would also be to ensure that any issues that arise from an influx of temporary residents are managed so that their stay in the area is positive and enjoyable and does not adversely impact on others.” Mr Mora wanted local residents to be kept informed on future planning for the site. “If we want to be seen to be clear and transparent then that is what needs to happen,” he said.

Police warn truck drivers BY ANDREW KING Police have issued a stern warning to truck drivers: they will be fined if they keep driving on a suburban Hornby street near a school. Seymour St is a no-go zone for heavy vehicles but it has not deterred them from rumbling past in breach of road signs. Between July 16 and 31 police warned 32 drivers who went down the street. Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit Sergeant Mike Moloney said police had contacted about 12 transport

companies to tell them not to use Seymour St. He said truck drivers were unaware that they should not be using the street. “We would rather make drivers aware that they could not use the street rather than use enforcement action,” he said. South Hornby School has an entrance off Seymour St. Principal Simon Moriarty (above) said trucks down the street were an “on-going concern” for the school and parents.

“Because of the lights we have out there [on Shands Rd] we don’t have road patrol in place but there is supervision along Seymour St towards Shands Rd to help kids to and from school. “We are very aware of where we are and work with parents around safety,” he said. Wigram MP Megan Woods said drivers were ignoring the sign on the street that says no heavy vehicles. She did not want to see truck drivers fined, but said safety was the priority. “If they continue to use the road after they know not to, then

of course fines would have to be issued,” she said. Dr Woods said a balance between residential and industrial needs had to be found. “It is a place where people live as well as being adjacent to an industrial area so we need to find that balance of safe roads for kids to cross and go to school and movement for industrial action.” Dr Woods said she was working with the New Zealand Transport Agency to put up a more prominent sign and look at whether a bylaw would be effective.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School have won the Litolff Cup in Tai Tapu on August 19. (Left to right) – Libby Vincent, Millie Mannering, Sarah McLeod and Ava Morrow have been through a year of rebuilding after losing the title to Christchurch Girls’ High School in 2014. The team won the 15km team time trial in convincing fashion, crossing the finish line 12sec ahead of rivals Villa Maria College. Rangi Ruru were back-to-back champions in 2012 and 2013. The team is now preparing for the National Secondary School’s Road Cycling Championships which will be held in the Manawatu from September 26-28.

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Tree recommendation

The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board has been recommended to decline the request to remove a common lime tree and an oriental plane tree affecting residents on Gladson Ave. The trees are on the Yaldhurst Rd frontage and hang into properties on Gladson Ave. A city council report was requested by the board as a result of a deputation made on December 18 by residents on Gladson Ave. City council staff recommended that the trees stay and be maintained to internationally recognised arboriculture standards.

Funding application

Herbie Agnew has applied for funding from the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board Youth Development Fund. The 24-year-old from Broomfield has been selected for the New Zealand Deaf Rugby Team to compete in a tournament to be held in Japan on November 14-21.

Teaching Mandarin: Preparing young PASSIONATE: Annelise Borger started her schooling at Middleton Grange and now works there as a Chinese Mandarin teacher.

Annelise Borger started off as a student at Middleton Grange, now she teaches Mandarin Chinese there. Next year she will teach it at three other schools and hopes to inspire fellow teachers to follow in her footsteps. Reporter Andrew King speaks with her

How long have you been teaching? This is my third year teaching Chinese (Mandarin) at Middleton Grange. This is my second year full time. The first year was just four hours a week. Where did you study? I did my Bachelor of Arts majoring in Chinese at Canterbury University. I then did my Graduate Diploma of teaching at Victoria, I didn’t go to Wellington for that I did it all online. What is your background with the Chinese language? Hmm, good question. I never learnt Chinese at school but had a lot of friends from Japan and Korea, so I knew that I worked well with international students. My sister encouraged me to do it mainly because she was living in

China at the time. She was teaching English over there. I soon realised that more Kiwis need to learn this language. Did you want to be a teacher when you were young? When I was young I said I didn’t want to become a teacher, but my mum is a teacher, so is my brother and my sister is too, I guess it is in the blood. So basically your whole family are teachers, what does your dad do? [Laughing] He is an engineer, not a teacher. So if you didn’t want to be a teacher what changed your mind? The increasing number in Chinese-speaking people in New Zealand means that for Kiwis, once they learn it, they can actually use it here, they don’t have to go overseas to use it. It’s really important for Kiwis to know there are so many opportunities on our back doorstep. It is a real language of the future and that made me want to teach it to people. What is your best memory from school? It wasn’t the academic side, even though I was pretty good at that. For me, it was all the extra stuff we used to do. I was always working with overseas students. The extracurricular activities were great too. I enjoyed the academic stuff but not as much as the sport, music and art stuff. Were there many Chinese-

speaking kids when you were at school? I went Middleton Grange, now I teach there, I loved it so much that I came back. We have an international college that had around 200 odd students before the earthquakes. It dropped down to about 100, but now it is coming back up which is great. What was it like learning a different language? I had only learnt French briefly up until year 10 I think. I thought I would be able to be fluent a lot quicker, but it’s really cool, getting your head around the characters and symbols. I learnt Spanish at uni as well but I find Chinese easier. I kept thinking about Spanish words as Chinese words so it all got pretty confusing there for a while. Were you born in Christchurch? Born in Auckland, moved to Australia for a couple of years then settled in Christchurch. What was it like growing up with your siblings? Because I was the youngest I was often left out by the others, I did a lot of playing by myself. Now we hang out a lot and get on, age doesn’t matter anymore. What was the last thing you all did together? We all go to the same church every weekend. We went to Castle Hill about a month ago for a weekend and caught up, went walking, hung out. It was good.

Kiwis for the future

Solar charge table for reserve

IN CLASS: Annelise Borger catches the attention of her class with Chinese characters. Next year she will have four different classes to teach.

Why work for Christian schools, are you religious? Yes, I’m a Christian. That’s why I wanted to work for Middleton. It has an awesome supportive environment. You get to teach what you believe and not what is just in your head but in your heart as well. How does that come into your teaching style? Here at Middleton we have a big focus on making people feel welcome, we don’t want to leave anyone out. By learning about different cultures we can make everyone feel more included. Some Chinese characters can point back to biblical times which give it a special little link for us. We want to tell other Christians the ‘good news’ so it is another way we can

share the gospel with them. Do the students respond well to that? Yes they do so we can make that instant connection. Share your cultures together so we can acknowledge that, making a bridge between the two cultures. The programme will have you moving around four schools, that will be difficult won’t it? I guess it will be. I am the only one that can do it at the moment. I don’t know many other people like me. I will be trying to train people up as I go. The other schools are only starting with an hour or two each week so it will be hard at the start. At the moment I have an assistant, he helps me out a lot. He makes sure I am

on the right track, teaching them proper Chinese. Are you married? Yeah, I got married at the end of 2013. My older sister in her early 30s got married in September that year, then it was me in December, then my brother in January. All three of you got married in a five-month period, were they all in Christchurch? They were all in Christchurch. I think our guests had to pick and chose which one they went to (laughing). Do you have any children of your own? I don’t have any kids myself – not while teaching. The principal said I can’t have any while I am teaching as well (laughing). Where do you see it taking you?

WE SPEClALlSE IN THE CARE AND PRESERVATION OF TREES FULLY QUALIFIED ARBORISTS

Yes we do

I hope to build the programmes here at Middleton Grange through years 7-13. It is currently only for years 7-9 at the moment, but I hope to have that going by 2019. The other schools – Hillview Christian and Aidanfield Christian Schools will start next year and go from years 7-10 then hopefully they feed into Middleton Grange. Also I would like to take the years 11, 12 and 13 over to China for a class trip. Hopefully you can find another person in that class to help you teach Chinese to future students. Yeah, that would be great. I would love to be the inspiration that gets another teacher in Chinese – we need more of them in New Zealand.

Paeroa Reserve in Riccarton will have a solar charge table installed on Wednesday. The table will be a place for people to gather and charge mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets. It is the result of a partnership between the city council and Riccarton West Safegrowth group who wanted something that would appeal to young people and families in the reserve. Christchurch business SolarBright Ltd developed and built the table and they were responsible for the installation of New Zealand’s first solar charge table in Re:START mall. The table will be one of four solar tables now located within the city. Riccarton West Safegrowth group secured funding through the city council’s Urban Renewal Fund. It is made up of local residents and stakeholders who want to help make Riccarton west a safe and friendly place for all residents of the neighbourhood. Cancer fundraiser nets $1145

▌FLAME ▌ FILES

Stay at the stove when cooking

BY ANDREW KING Two Westburn School pupils have shown age means nothing when it comes to raising money for a cause. Logan Parker and Tom Withers, both aged 13, raised $1145 for Canteen and had their heads shaved in front of their peers by another pupil’s mother. Their associate principal Andrew Hardie donated his hair for the cause joining the boys on stage. “It was a good haircut,” Mr Hardie said. Logan came up with the idea and mentioned it to his mate Tom. The two set off collecting donations from around their school, and turned it into a bit of a competition as to which class could raise the most money. “Logan had the idea to shave, I asked to join and then we picked Canteen as our charity,” Tom said. They have continued to raise money by selling UV colour changing bracelets. “The community is quite supportive,” Mr Hardie said. “The boys did a lot of hard work to get that amount.” Regional manager at Canteen New Zealand Michelle Driffill was impressed with the effort shown by the two boys. “It was a phenomenal amount of money,” she said. “We get people who approach

BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Just after I wrote last week’s column we saw a perfect example of the devastation that unattended cooking can cause. A Leicester Cres, Hoon Hay, house is now probably unrepairable and the occupants have lost nearly everything in a significant house fire. There were others less spectacular through the week. I know I’ve talked about this so many times I sound like a cracked record but it remains that too many of us leave the stove top cooking while we carry on with our busy lives. We just can’t seem to get through to people that you’re then at risk of making that busy life far more busy in a totally unwanted direction. Once upon a time household cooks would never dream of leaving the kitchen. You still need to stay right there, at the stove. On Friday last week a couple of people got caught in a lift in a Birmingham Drive business. One of them was quite distressed. That’s understandable but on this occasion the city rescue appliance crew were able to make entry with the special key they carry to quickly rescue the stuck occupants. Finally, a laboratory at ESR at the university had a steaming concentrated sulpuric acid incident on Monday where eight people were affected by the stinging fumes. Fire Service personnel donned protective gear and cleaned up. No lasting effects appear to have occurred.

The master suite is bigger than many living rooms with its own walk in robe and ensuite. The second bedroom is also exceedingly generous - more a triple sized bedroom than a double in fact! Bedroom three is a double and there is a study or box room also at this level. Both the main bathroom and ensuite have baths as well as separate showers and are certainly not small. For those whom a garage is important this will not disappoint. All this situated on an easy care section and in zone for the highly sought after Thorrington Primary and Cashmere High. My clients are realistic and want to be sold now so call asap to view - this property may well sell very quickly! Open Homes Sat/Sun 12.30-1.00pm

Keep it moving with Physiotherapy Associates Did you know that recent studies suggest that as little as 150 minutes a week of medium to intense exercise affects your mortality? Yet many of us believe we aren’t able to exercise following injury or because we are getting older.

R

ichard Hopkins of Physiotherapy Associates on Wainoni Road knows that physiotherapy is not just for post-accident rehabilitation but also helps with keeping people moving and increasing exercise tolerance and activity throughout their lives. He points out that we need to “use or lose it.”

“Being physically active creates a long list of benefits and enables people to stay independent as they grow older. However, many people consider themselves too old or worn out to exercise; that was something they did when they were young,” he explains. Yet regular exercise and physical activity can reduce the risk of developing

some diseases and disabilities and it can be an effective treatment for many chronic conditions. Studies show that people with arthritis, heart disease, or diabetes benefit from regular exercise. It also helps people with high blood pressure, balance problems, or who have difficulty walking. There are heaps of ways to keep active both in short spurts fitted in around other tasks, or at certain times set aside for exercise. Walking, gardening, even taking the stairs rather than the lift are all free, and local communities offer various exercise groups for all ages. He recommends starting slowly to build up stamina and strength and says it is never too late to start. Our bodies’ capacity to adapt and improve with regular exercise does not diminish much with age. However, when problems do occur, the team at Physiotherapy Associates can help with the diagnosis and treatment of muscle related concerns. Whether it is pain or

injury caused by an accident at work, on the road or playing sport, or because of occupational misuse, they will work to get you back to optimal movement so that you are back to work as soon as possible. Using tools like spinal manipulation, their aim is to return your body to what it should be doing, sometimes even better than it was before. They are highly regarded in their field with more than 50 years’ experience, teaching to post-graduate level and providing physiotherapy services to provincial and national sport teams. They also offer pilates rehabilitation on a one-to-one basis, breathing retraining to help with respiratory problems and ergonomic training out in industry to safeguard the wellness of employees.

Find them at 86A Wainoni Road, visit www.physioA.co.nz or call (03) 3897196 for more information.

Super Saturday at Northlands

A

ll the fun of the circus came to brighten up a wet winter day at Northlands on August 15. Clowns, stilt walkers and assorted entertainers strolled throughout the mall to delight both young and old. Games were played under the Big Top, supervised by the magnificent Ringmaster, as all throughout the day faces were painted and old-fashioned candyfloss was enjoyed. It was a super Saturday, not just for children, but to bring out childhood memories in everyone.

Herbs and natural ingredients give powerful support for your immune system!

R

esearchers have shown that certain herbs and natural ingredients can dramatically reduce your chances of succumbing to colds and flu. Formulas like GO Healthy “GO VirDefence” has been based on the latest research and has already proven itself too many. Due to the high potency extracts used in this formula, most will find only one or two capsules daily sufficient to keep our immune system at optimum. However, at the first sign of any immune attack, eg headaches, sore throat, aches, etc, the dose should be increased to one or two capsules up to three times daily. Most will then find the symptoms will disappear quickly without getting worse. GO Vir-Defence contains the following powerful ingredients: Olive leaf extract has become one of the most popular ingredients used in the treatment of immune attacks as it has strong anti-microbial properties that help slow the growth of bacteria and prevent the replication of viruses. Garlic extract is effective in combating bacteria, viruses and fungi, and supporting the immune system. In general, it may be used as a preventative for most infectious conditions, digestive as well as respiratory. The anti-microbial action makes it suitable for treatment of respiratory infections, influenza, recurrent colds and respiratory catarrh. Andrographis extract has powerful immune enhancing properties and has been shown to help prevent the common cold as well as reduce the duration and severity of the symptoms of the common cold. Echinacea extract is a natural antibiotic and infection fighter. It helps kill bacteria, viruses and fungi, and provides powerful immune support. Pau d’arco extract assists in enhancing the body’s immune system. Citrus bioflavonoids work with vitamin C and support the immune system as well as strengthen capillaries and reduce inflammation. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and helps counteract many types of bacteria and viral infections. Elderberry extract provides nutrients for immune support. Zinc is an essential mineral for the immune system and general health. It is required by every cell in the body. It is common to have sub-optimal levels of zinc. Zinc possesses antiviral activity.

Generally, this all-natural formula is very safe and highly effective without any side effects, but due to the high potency extracts used, please check with us first if you are on any prescription medication. This formula is also not suitable during pregnancy or lactation. Vir-Defence and further information are available from Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, just past CNB School. Phone 388 5757. Bringing you the best in natural health!

One in two people deficient in B12

merging research has shown as many as 50 per cent of older adults and as many as 25 per cent of younger adults are deficient in vitamin B12. Scientists at Rush University Medical Center found those most deficient in vitamin B12 to have the smallest brain mass and the lowest scores on tests measuring short-term memory, concentration and brain performance. Another study showed that older people with higher levels of B12 in their blood have bigger, healthier brains and score higher on cognitive tests than those with lower levels. Yet another recent landmark study showed that B12 supplementation slows the accelerated rate of brain shrinkage and declining cognitive function. B12 is essential for energy production, cell health, regulation of mood and sleep cycles, nerve health and repair, and prevention of homocysteine, a serious cardiovascular risk factor that is known to cause damage and plaque in the blood vessels. It can also increase the chances of a stroke. Harvard researchers found a 34 per cent decrease risk of vision loss in a study of participants aged 40-plus, who supplemented with B12. Another study linked a higher risk of hearing loss in subjects in their 60s who were low in B12.

The reason so many people lack B12 appears to be our body’s ability to absorb it, declining with age as the digestive system becomes less efficient. Anti-reflux medication and other drugs further reduce B12 absorption. The good news is B12 in the form of methylcobalamin sublingual tablets that are dissolved in the mouth and thru bypassing the digestive tract have been shown to effectively raise B12 levels in the body. Further detailed information is available from the natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton. Call 388 5757, we are always happy to help!

SHOWBIZ CHRISTCHURCH follows its recent 'Phantom of the Opera' production with a musical lovingly ripped off, from Monty Python and the Holy Grail - SPAMALOT. Cantabrians will start “looking on the bright side of life”, with Monty Python’s SPAMALOT galloping onto the Isaac Theatre Royal in September. SHOWBIZ CHRISTCHURCH was founded in 1938 as the Christchurch Operatic Inc., and since then has specialised in the staging of musical theatre in Christchurch, providing education and development for members and the community, and entertaining Christchurch audiences with many of the world’s top musical and performing arts shows. SPAMALOT is based on the legendary tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, following their medieval jaunt in pursuit of the Holy Grail in a variety of bizarre settings, accompanied by beautiful showgirls, not to mention flying cows, a killer rabbit and some French people! SPAMALOT will make audiences laugh-a-lot, sing-a-long-a-lot, dress-up-in-silly-costumes-a-lot and revel in the “glorious, irresistible silliness” of the most infectiously funny musical of the millennium. Featuring all-time favourite comedy song ‘ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE’ and other hilarious songs - ‘He Is Not Dead Yet’, ‘Knights Of The Round Table’, ‘Find Your Grail’ this show is a truly joyous colourful spectacle and fantastic fun. See ad below for booking details.

s well as plenty of Christchurch events successful junior tournaments in Nelson, Blenheim, the West Coast and Ashburton compliment the established Tennis Canterbury events held in each of the School Holidays and over holiday weekends. With Z Energy Wilding Park now having 18 courts playable major tournaments are now able to be held in just 1 venue after multiple venues had to be used since 2011. Despite this logistical challenge numbers involved in tournament play have now rebounded to above 2011 levels. 2015 will see Wilding Park host the prestigious Tennis New Zealand Junior Masters over Labour Weekend. This event was programmed for Christchurch in 2011 but had to be transferred to Blenheim after the quakes and this is only the second time since its inception that the event has been held in the South Island. The event will see 8 players in each of the boys 12’s, 14’s and 16’s age groups’ battle it out.

Players gained their spots by gaining points through tournament play with all sanctioned events counting and selected tournaments such as the Canterbury Champs and Nationals having additional points up for grabs. Canterbury regional players to gain automatic invitations include Burnside Park’s Taylor Nelson and Dylan Heap in the 16’s boys, Hagley Park’s Jamie Garbett and Te Kura’s William Schneideman in the 14’s Boys and in the 12’s Nick Schneideman from Te Kura and Shirley’s Jordan Edwards. Representation in the girls grades include Marlborough’s Otway twins Jade and Kyla in the 12’s with Ashburton’s Tessa McCann in the 14’s. Tennis Canterbury has received 3 of the 12 wildcards on offer with current New Zealand representatives Sydney based Valentina Ivanov (16’s Girls), and Naynay Homkrum from Shirley (14’s girls) receiving spots and Te Kura’s Jenner Johnson grabbing an opportunity in the Boys 12’s.

Canterbury club wins national award

A

fter narrowly missing out in 2014, this year the Cashmere Tennis Club were named in July Club of the Year at the Tennis New Zealand Awards, held in Christchurch, during the recent Davis Cup tie. As well as a highly successful men’s interclub team which again took out the ASB Premier Competition last season, the club has had a great last few years. Its facilities have been continually upgraded with the high quality hardcourts generously being utilised by Tennis

Canterbury as an additional tournament venue while the Z Energy Wilding Park courts came back online. A highly motivated coaching team has seen a big resurgence in junior numbers up from 120 immediately after the earthquakes to over 260, and its senior club members ensure the club hums along both on and off court. It is hoped that resource consent can be gained to light some of the club’s courts to allow for more playing and coaching time to be available. Tennis Canterbury congratulates Cashmere on its fine achievement.

hanges to the rules governing ASB Senior Interclub, in conjunction with an improving player grading system, has seen continued growth in Senior Interclub teams over the last five years. From 89 teams in 2010/11, there are now over 110 teams playing in 15 different divisions of competition. As well as Men’s (one Premier and seven graded divisions) and Women’s (one Premier and three divisions), there are Mixed grades that play more doubles than singles. This year’s Premier grade will start in early

September to allow space for the Canterbury Open Tournament to be held at the end of November, with all other divisions starting in early October. There are normally 16 playing weeks in a season with divisional competitions culminating in finals held mid-March. Why not dust off your old racket and head to your local club to get involved in the action? There are grades for all abilities, or if you just want to play socially, most clubs have at least one club day per week and plenty of great social activities.

Enthusiastic coaches take modified equipment, including low compression balls into schools and, with the assistance of teachers, deliver a highly valuable series of lessons to eager youngsters.

for their school midweek and their club over the weekends. New tournaments held in school time for secondary school students have proved an outstanding success, with the short formats used providing lots of quick-fire matches and introducing many players to playing “tournament tennis” with multiple games on a day rather than just the two matches that interclub and schools tennis provides. Many of these first time tournament players were enticed back to the more traditional tournaments held regularly throughout the year, playing normal formats of “best of three sets” with a match tie break to 10 for a third set for most grades, apart from main draw matches which stay as three traditional full sets.
